Definition
Eye drop instillation is the process by which a liquid is introduce into the eyes by drops
Purpose of instillation
1. To contract or dilate the pupil
2. To relieve pain and discomfort
3. To combat infection and inflammation
4. For moistening the eye
Steps of procedure
1. Eye medications in the form of drops or ointments
2.To prevent over flow of medication into the national and pharyngeal passages that reducing the systematic absorption
2After administration of medication instead the client to close the I gently to help distribute the medication
3If both an eye drops and eye ointment are scheduled to be administered at the same time administer the eye drop first
4.Wash hand and wear glow before administering a medication to avoid contaminating the eye
5. Avoid touching any part of the eye with the dropper or applicator
6.Monitor the pulse and blood pressure if receiving an opthalmic beta blocker and instruct the client to do the same the nurse should obtain pulse parameters from the health care provider
7.Instruct the client to read the medication labels carefully to ensure administration of the correct medication and current strength
8 Remind the client to keep this medications out of the reach of children
9.Inside the client avoid driving or operating a service equipment if vision is blurred
10 Instruct the client to administer Missed doses of medication as soon as it is remembered, unless the next dose is scheduled to be administered in 1 to 2 hours
11.Reinforce the importance of using eye medication to treat glaucoma as prescribed and not to discontinue this medication without consulting doctor
12. Educate the client with glaucoma that the disorder cannot be cured only controlled
Because the timing of medication administration is critical, administer eye medications at precise intervals as prescribed, separate the instillation by t3to 5 minutes if two medication must be administered at the same time
